Coronavirus vaccine: Everything you need to know

Spread the love

Coronavirus vaccine is being developed in order to contain the virus. People all across the world are worried about the virus and are taking necessary precautions from being affected by it.
It has been rather only three months since the Coronavirus has emerged in China, causing fever, coughing, and, in severe cases, pneumonia. The disease known as Covid-19 has made its foray into several countries and many people have been affected by it. There has been much worldwide concern expressed about it and in all countries, necessary precautions are being taken to deal with it. Efforts are on to come up with a Coronavirus vaccine as it is the need of the hour. The virus is deadly and needs to be treated.
People are making use of face masks all across the world. Travelers are being rounded and checked medically to ensure that they are not infected by the virus. The World Health Organization is much concerned about Covid-19’s fatality rate which is growing globally. It is very contagious. Still, most people do recover in a week or two, without the need for hospitalization. There is panic no doubt, as people are scared they will be infected by it.

More about COVID-19

COVID-19 is a potentially fatal respiratory illness and is forcing the cancellation of major events, postponing sports seasons and sending many people into self-imposed quarantine.
Scientists are making earnest efforts to better understand the virus’s genetic makeup, how it infects cells and also how effectively it can be treated. As of now, there is no cure, and medical specialists can only treat the symptoms of the disease. However, the long-term strategy to combat COVID-19 has spread to every continent worldwide besides Antarctica in order to develop a vaccine.
Developing new vaccines does take time and they must be rigorously tested and confirmed safe via clinical trials prior to being routinely made use of in humans.
Vaccines are incredibly important in fighting against diseases.

What is a vaccine?

A vaccine is a type of treatment that is aimed at stimulating the body’s immune system to fight against infectious pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses.
As the human body is resilient to disease, it is better to evolve a natural defense system against nasty disease-causing microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. The defense system which happens to be the immune system is made up of different types of white blood cells that can rather detect as well as destroy foreign invaders. Some eat up the bacteria, some produce antibodies which can tell the body what to destroy and take out the germs, while other cells memorize what the invaders tend to look like, so the body that the body responds quickly if they invade again.

Making of a COVID-19 vaccine

The pathogen at the center of the outbreak, SARS-CoV-2, actually belongs to the family of viruses referred to as coronaviruses. In developing a vaccine that does target SARS-CoV-2, scientists are making conscious efforts. The projections do enable the virus to enter human cells where it can rather replicate and make copies of itself. They are known as “spike proteins” or “S” proteins. Researchers have indeed been able to map the projections in 3D, and the research does show that a viable antigen can be in any Coronavirus vaccine.
This so as the S protein is prevalent in Coronaviruses battled against in the past which includes one that caused the SARS outbreak in China in 2002-03. On account of this, the researchers got a head start on building vaccines against part of the S protein and also making use of animal models. Coronavirus vaccine is being prepared by companies in order to ensure that the virus does not take its toll.

Several companies across the world working on a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine are involved in developing different ways to stimulate the immune system. Some research organizations are focusing on amplifying the immune response. This approach is targeted more toward the elderly, who do not respond as effectively when vaccinated. It is hoped that by studying adjuvants to boost a vaccine, the elderly can be vaccinated with a mix of ingredients that would rather supercharge their immunity.

When will a vaccine be available?

It is understood that the vaccine is roughly a year and a half away, even though human trials do start within the next month or two. Efforts are on.
Vaccine production takes a long time as many steps are involved and a lot of regulatory hurdles that need to be got over. Coronavirus vaccine is the need of the hour as people are much concerned about the virus.

Kids need to be protected from the symptoms like nausea, vomiting, confusion and dizziness. These can be prevented by giving the child liquids and keeping him in a cool place. If the temperature rises above 103 degree F, consult the doctor immediately.

Dehydration can occur in extremely active kids. During exercise and staying outdoors give lots of water and other cold drinks. Juicy fruits like watermelon, lemon and oranges will help the kid’s body to combat dehydration.

Sun exposure

Kids must be limited from direct exposure to the sun

Dress kids in long sleeved, light weight clothes which will prevent their skin from direct exposure from the sun’s rays. Hats and sunglasses will prevent their eyes and face.

As far as possible the child must stay indoors or in the shade during the peak hours of the sun i.e. between 11am -4 pm. Try to plan outdoor activities for children in the mornings and evenings.

Sunscreen lotion with a SPF factor can protect the child from sunburns. It helps to reduce the intensity of the sun’s ultra violet rays which actually causes sunburns.

Shade provides relief from the heat but it does not protect one from the UVR of the sun. Sunburn can take place in the shade also because the light is scattered and reflected. Children with fair skin are prone to sunburn in the shade also.

Water safety:

Children love to play with water and near pools. Small kids can also drown themselves in tub or bucket of water. Do not leave the child alone near water or in the swimming pool to prevent accidents. Water pools or swimming pools in the house premises should be fenced properly up to 4 feet

Avoid Bugs:

Kids must be kept away from stagnant water where mosquitoes thrive. There are several poisonous plants which the child may be exposed to while playing outdoors. If a child comes scratching from outside wash the area with soap and water 2-3 times. Then apply a cream or calamine lotion.

Kid’s skin must be sprayed with mosquito repellents if they are in an area where there are insects.

Check carefully if the child is allergic to some insect bites or pollen of plants.

Summer safety tips for kidsTicks thrive in warm, moist areas which can harm the skin of the child and cause diseases. The best way to prevent ticks is to give the child a good bath within two hours after coming indoors. Ticks stick to clothes; hence the clothes must be thrown for a wash to get rid of the ticks.

The entire body including underarms, around the ears, behind the knees, around the waist and inside the belly button should be checked of tick bites. If fever follows a tick bite, doctor must be consulted.

Never leave the kid in the waiting car. The car gets heated and the child is at a risk of getting a heat stroke. The body of a child heats up faster than the adults.

Many kids enjoy playing on trampolines in the backyard. Back yard trampolines have been found to be the leading causes of summertime injuries like broken bones, head injuries etc. Trampolines must be safeguarded with nets and must be situated away from walls and fences.

Summer survival kit:

Parents must always carry some items with them in a bag or purse which are required for summer emergencies. One must carry a small first aid kit with antiseptic ointment, bandages, cotton wool and some medicines for stomach problems. Other essential things are a cell phone, water, some fruits, sun protection lotion, insect repellent and tweezers.

With the summer season almost here, it is time to make a few changes in the routine to have a skin-friendly summer. Skin specialists recommend a few tips for taking care of yourself in the hot and humid weather. So here are some summer tips for your skin.

Screen the sun:

Zero down on a sunscreen that best meets your requirements and contains sun protection factor (SPF). SPF 30 is best recommended for Indian skin types. Apply sun screen 20 to 30 minutes before stepping out and ensure you wear sunscreen every day, even when you stay indoors.

Follow the essential routine:

Follow the cleansing, toning and moisturising ritual twice a day for best results. Summers are the most nightmarish time for skin issues, specially acne. To keep your skin acne-free use a cleanser which contains salicylic acid and helps reduce acne and prevent future breakouts.

Exfoliate:

Summer tips for your skinIncorporating exfoliation into your skincare regime is a must to avoid dull skin. Exfoliants remove old, dry, dead skin cells, toxins and other deposits and allow new skin cells to surface. Scrub your elbows and knees at least twice a week to get rid of dead tissues. Rub a slice of lemon with sugar every alternate day to keep them clean and to remove tan.

Hair woes:

Since hair tends to be moisture-deprived during summers, overuse of any kind of chemical and hair styling tool should be avoided. Shampooing often results in loss of shine and moisture. Consider switching to a gentle shampoo and use a deep conditioner to replenish the loss of moisture. Massage your hair with a mixture of coconut oil, castor and olive oil regularly to keep your hair nourished.

Happy feet:

Start with wearing an open sandal in the summer to keep your feet dry and give them a chance to ‘breathe’. Your feet are subject to sunburn just like the rest of your body. Use sunscreen during the day and during the evenings apply a lightweight moisturizer. You could also give yourself a pedicure at home.

Maintain a healthy diet:

With summers in full swing, it is advised that apart from drinking lots of water, a special summer diet consisting of light and healthy food would ensure a cool mind and body. To keep your skin hydrated, eat lot of fresh fruits and green vegetables. Include fruits and vegetables like bitter gourd, spinach, cucumber, watermelons, oranges, cherries, plums and lychee to your diet.
