7 Healthy Summer Foods should Add to Your Diet

Spread the love

It is summer that amazing time of year when fresh produce abounds. There is an abundance of fresh, delicious and healthy choices during the summer. Better so far: many of summer’s fruits and vegetables are brimming with the secret of health benefits. Here are some of my favorites and 7 Healthy Summer Foods should Add to Your Diet why they are a particularly good choice in the summer as reported on in Eating Well Magazine.

Corn

Nothing says summer like fresh sweet corn. And did you know that 2 antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin in corn may act like the natural sunglasses, helping to form the macular pigment that filters out some of the sun’s damaging rays? It is true. The same antioxidants may also help to lower the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60 though much of the damage occurs decades earlier.

Iced Coffee

An iced pick-me-up is the great way to start the summer mornings. Better yet: drinking a single cup of coffee daily may lower the risk of developing skin cancer. In one of the study of more than 93,000 women, published in European Journal of Cancer Prevention, those who drank 1 cup of caffeinated coffee per day reduced their risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer by about 10%. And the more they drank up to about six cups or so per day the lower their risk. Decaf did not seem to offer the same protection.

Tart Cherries

7 Healthy Summer Foods should Add to Your DietThey deliver the host of health benefits. You might have heard that drinking tart cherry juice can help you get the better night’s sleep and quell post workout pain. But did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you to slim down and get the leaner? When scientists at the University of Michigan Health System put rats on the high-fat diet supplemented with either a tart-cherry powder equal to 1% of weight of their total diet or the same number of calories from carbohydrate, those that got the cherry powder gained less weight and body fat. Why? The anthocyanins in tart cherries activate the molecule that helps rev up fat burning and decrease fat storage.

Tomatoes

There is no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defense against blazing summer sun. But eating tomatoes could give you the little extra protection: consuming more lycopene is the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red that may protect the skin from sunburn. In one of the study, participants who were exposed to UV light had almost 50 % less skin reddening after they ate 2 ½ tablespoons of tomato paste or drank about 1 2/3 cups of carrot juice daily, in addition to their regular diet, for 10 – 12 weeks. Supplements, although, were not as effective: in the same study, those who received the lycopene supplement or synthetic lycopene were not significantly protected against the sunburn.

Watermelon

Staying hydrated keeps the memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool by sweating during the hot summer months. The good news is that you donot just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: in addition to delivering skin-protecting lycopene, watermelon is 92 % water hence the name. Another boon? Research shows that the eating foods that are full of water helps keep you satisfied on fewer calories. (Interestingly sufficient, drinking water alongside foods does not have the same effect.

Iced Tea

Sure, a tall glass of iced tea on the hot day is refreshing, but did you know it might also do your body good? Studies show if you drink tea regularly, you may lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and diabetes, plus have healthier teeth and gums and stronger bones. How? Tea is rich in a class of antioxidants called flavonoids. Regardless of the variety black, green, oolong, white or herbalmaximize the power of tea’s flavonoids by drinking it freshly brewed. If you want to keep a batch of cold tea in your refrigerator, “add a little lemon juice,” The citric acid and vitamin C in that squeeze of lemon or lime, or orange help to preserve the flavonoids.

Blueberries

Fresh blueberries straight from berry patch are a special treat. Turns out the antioxidants in them may help to ward off muscle exhaustion by mopping up the additional free radicals that muscles produce during an exercise, according to recent research out of New Zealand.

9 Most Fattening Foods Of Summer

Smart Food Choices for Summer

Ahhh, it is summer: barbecues, cocktails at pool, baseball games, and lots of the fried chicken, ribs, potato salad, ice cream, hot dogs, and beer. The living might be easy, but you need to know about 9 Most Fattening Foods Of Summer and better choices at the backyard barbecue or beach boardwalk.

High-Fat Meats on Barbecue

The bad news: barbecue can damage the waistline. A 20 ounce T-bone steak can weigh in at 1,540 calories and 124 g fat. An average cheese burger has 750 calories and 45 grams of fat. What about pork or beef ribs. They come from the fattiest part of an animal. The good news: You can go lean with cuts like pork tenderloin, skinless chicken breast, and lean ground beef.

Take Me Out to Ball Game

Hot dogs and sausages are summer treats for many of us, but you may save them for baseball games. It is not just about fat or calories — after all, you can choose the low-fat versions. Most hot dogs, bratwurst, and other sausages are very high in the sodium. Typical nutrition scores include:

Hot dog: 280 calories, 15 g fat, 1,250 mg of sodium

Kielbasa (6-oz): 330 calories, 24 g fat, 1,590 mg sodium

Mayonnaise-Based Salads

A small ½ -cup portion of typical potato salad has 180 calories and 12 grams of fat; the same amount of coleslaw has about 150 calories and 8 grams of fat. To cut calories, try making the salads with the light mayonnaise; or mix mayo with the low-fat yogurt, light sour cream, or chicken stock. Or why not try the German-style potato salad, using more vinegar than oil. Then toss lots of veggies into any salad to increase the fiber and nutrients.

Frozen Concoctions

Sweet, fruity alcoholic drinks the kind frequently served with an umbrella might go down easy, but the calories add up in a hurry. A piña colada can range from 245 to 490 calories, a daiquiri from 300 to 800 calories, and a Long Island iced tea can set you back 520 calories or more with much of it from sugar. Instead of high calorie drinks, try wine, a wine spritzer, or a mixed drink with the seltzer and a splash of 100% fruit juice.

Satisfying Thirst Quenchers

Staying hydrated is an essential in summer, but those cold drinks can cause havoc with your waistline. Be careful what you choose — if you’re drinking 12-ounce containers of sweet tea, sweetened soda, energy drinks, juice drinks, or beer, you’re probably taking in about 150 calories a pop. Smoothies, milkshakes, and cold coffee concoctions can go much higher. Try water or light versions of your favorite thirst quenchers.

Refreshing the Frozen Treats

A cup of soft-serve ice cream can have the 380 calories and 22 grams of fat. Make it the chocolate cookie dough milkshake concoction, and the calories soar to 720, with 28 grams of fat. You do not need to give up frozen treats, just pass on huge portions or high fat toppings. Look for frozen desserts like sherbet, fudge bars, fruit bars, or other treats under 150 calories per serving or fruit desserts like the strawberry shortcake.

Frighteningly Fattening Fair Food

Fairs and boardwalks serve up plenty of deep-fried diet disasters. From the fried cheesecake around 500 calories, fried macaroni and cheese roughly 610 calories to enormous turkey legs about 1,136 calories and 54 grams of fat, most eat-as-you-walk foods are the calorie overload. Skip the fried foods and instead choose the cotton candy, caramel apples, or a simple grilled meat or share your treat with a friend.

9 Most Fattening Foods Of Summer Salad Toppers

Salads can be the perfect summer dinner: light, refreshing bowls of veggies and lean protein. But high calorie toppers can push the salad from lean to fattening in a hurry. Fried chicken strips, bacon, cheese, creamy dressings, and croutons are among worst offenders. Instead, top your greens with grilled chicken, strips of lean meat, or eggs, then pile on veggies and sprinkle with the light dressing.

Mindless Munching on Snacks

A handful of any snack would not do much harm, but too much can damage the diet. One ounce of potato chips or cheese puffs is roughly 160 calories and 10 grams of fat. Cheese nachos can contain the 692 calories and 38 grams fat. And a 10 cup box of movie theater popcorn can have 550 calories and 31 grams fat. Try snacking on fruits, veggies with the light dip, or small portions of fat-free popcorn.

Finger Licking Fried Chicken

A bucket of the fried chicken is an easy way to feed a crowd, but it can wreak havoc on the waistline and arteries. So forgo fried chicken and toss boneless, skinless chicken breasts on the grill, instead. Marinades and spice rubs add flavor to these quick-cooking cuts of poultry. The nutritional differences are striking.

Skinless chicken breast (3.5 oz): 167 calories, 7 g fat

Breaded, fried chicken breast: 360 calories, 21 g fat

Tips to Increase Height Naturally

About 20 percent or more of body height depends upon our environment, activities and diet. Thus, we can increase our height in a natural way by following certain basic rules in our daily lives. Here we have explained 9 important tips to increase height naturally.

Proper Sleep:

It is the well-known fact that our body grows and regenerates tissues while we rest. Proper sleep and rest are absolutely essential for a growing body. It is believed that the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is produced naturally in our bodies during sound, deep and slow wave sleep. Growing children and teenagers should have at least 8 to 11 hours of proper sleep every night in order to reach their maximum height. It is extremely important to ensure that you have a proper sleeping environment. It should be serene, minus disturbing noises or strong lights. Here are some tips to ensure sound sleep:

Taking a warm water bath before going to bed can greatly improve the quality of sleep.

You can drink one cup of chamomile tea before hitting the bed. This is really useful to encourage the sleep.

Proper sleeping habit is definitely top answer when it comes to growing ones height naturally.

Regular Exercise and Sports

One of best tips to grow height naturally is by being physically fit and active as the child. Regular exercise and sports improves ones height. When you are physically active, your body demands more healthy nutrients and subsequently, an increase in nutrient intake results in growth.

Indulging in sports like swimming, aerobics, tennis, cricket, football, basketball or a number of stretching exercises are a good way to keep our body growing. Our muscles improve our growth prospects besides cleansing and detoxifying our body through sweating. Regular exercise or sports should definitely form a part of our daily activities.

Swimming is one of the best ways to increase your height. If one starts this at an early age, surely his/her height will be adequate. 2 hours of daily swimming for 4-5 days a week can be highly effective in increasing your height. The breast stroke is specially recommended for those who wish to increase their height. Swimming is a full body, intense exercise which will help to lengthen your muscles and build muscle strength.

Some of the stretches you can try out to begin with are the car stretch, super stretch, cobra stretch, the bridge, bow down, twists, the table and basic leg stretches. It is recommended to do simple stretching exercises on a regular basis, for a minimum of 15 minutes for these to be effective for you. Stretches serves a great warm up before a workout.

Hanging exercises can be useful to grow one’s height through exercise. Though these may seem a bit tough to try out in the beginning, you will get the hang of them slowly. All you need is a bar for this. Hang from it with your arms and spine stretched for 10 seconds. Repeat 12 sets one after the other or continue to do this for 2 minutes every day.

Yoga:

Yoga is great and comparatively less arduous way to increase the height naturally. Yoga brings about overall fitness which is useful to give a boost to your height. Certain yoga poses facilitate the release of growth-inducing hormones in the body. The stretching and balancing exercises involved in yoga strengthen the muscles and improve the posture of the body as well. Try yoga poses such as triangle pose (trikonasana), cobra pose (bhujangaasana), mountain pose (tadasana), pleasant pose (sukhasana), tree pose (Vriksasana). You can addSuryanamaskar to your fitness regime too.

Tips to increase height naturallyMaintaining the Correct Posture:

Due attention should be given towards maintaining a correct posture from childhood. Simple things like sitting straight on a chair, keeping your shoulders straight, chin high, and hips over your feet while walking or standing can actually have favourable effects on your height. Do not slouch while walking.

A straight spine and a strong back are very vital in increasing your height. Align your neck and head without bending or slouching. Having a good pillow and a body-friendly mattress are equally important in keeping your spine comfortable.

It should be noted that your shoulders should not stoop while walking or standing. Hunching should be avoided by all means. A good posture makes you look tall, smart and confident.

Balanced Diet:

A balanced diet is absolutely essential to get proper nutrition. Stay away from junk food at any cost. Avoid saturated fats, carbonated drinks and excessive sugar-loaded foods as these can cause a negative impact on your height. It should be ensured that you get all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs, to grow to your full height.

Vitamin D and proteins help in triggering the growth hormones, and are required for proper growth of teeth and bones. Hence, the foods which are rich in these nutrients such as cheese, legumes, tofu, lean meat, egg white should be included in your diet.

Intake of zinc is also very important as its deficiency can lead to stunted growth in children. Foods such as asparagus, chocolate, eggs, oysters and peanuts are rich in zinc.

Calcium found in dairy products and green vegetables is required for the growth and development of bones.

Apart from this, other nutrients like minerals like magnesium and phosphorus, carbohydrates and vitamins should not be ignored as they also contribute towards proper growth of the body. The nutritional requirements can also be fulfilled by taking supplements in limited quantities.

It is important to have good metabolism. Hence, you can have six balanced meals throughout the day. Smaller but well-spanned portions can be helpful to boost your metabolic rate. This will lead to lesser fat storage in your body, thus allowing you to grow taller.

Avoid Growth Stunting factors:

You can ensure that your height doesn’t get affected by external or internal factors. Hence, keep in mind a few things:

Taking drugs and alcohol at a young age can be extremely harmful. Consuming these can lead to stunted growth and malnutrition, thus preventing you from reaching your full height. The intake of caffeine should be restricted, particularly among children as it keeps you from sleeping soundly and regularly. As kids and adolescents require a good eight to eleven hours of sound sleep, caffeine can restrict that to a great extent, thus indirectly contributing to short stature.

Apart from this, steroids have also been found to inhibit bone growth in young children, adversely affecting their height. Research has shown that asthma-affected children and teenagers who use inhalers tend to grow up to about ½an inch shorter than others. This is because these inhalers dispense relatively small amounts of the steroid called budesonide.

Strong Immune System:

Certain childhood illnesses can also cause stunted growth. These can be avoided by regular immunization and taking plenty of Vitamin C which is found in citrus fruits like orange, grapefruit and lemon. The immune system can be kept strong by eating whole and fresh foods, and avoiding processed and hydrogenated foods such as the very popular margarine.

A healthy diet will lead to a healthy immune system. Incorporate lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet to maintain a healthy immune system.

Ask For Medical Aid:

If you have reached your mid-teens and hail from a family where all members are tall, but find that your height isn’t developing, it is judicious to visit a doctor. Certain medical conditions can be detected at an early stage. Hence, if you are doing everything all the above but still not growing, seek medical advice.

Build Your Confidence:

If a person is tall but lacks confidence, it’s of no use. Hence, it is very important to build confidence from childhood and cultivate it as you grow older. You can take part in school activities, join a club and spend time pursuing your interests and hobbies. All of these act towards boosting your mood and sense of well-being, thus affecting your confidence levels. If you have a positive mindset and are brimming with confidence, even a shorter stature won’t seem to be a hindrance for you. Hence, cultivate your confidence!

Don’t wait any longer; start right away to keep your body growing! Follow these tips to gain height naturally!

Rickets is caused due to Vitamin ‘D’ deficiency

Rickets is caused due to Vitamin ‘D’ deficiency

Rickets is caused due to Vitamin ‘D’ deficiency or improper metabolism of vitamin D, calcium or phosphate. Rickets leads to softening and weakening of bones etc.  It is quite common problem in children in underdeveloped and developing countries. It occurs due to lack of proper nutrition or starvation. It occurs in adults too.

The primary cause of rickets is a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is needed for the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus in the body, which, in turn affects how calcium is deposited in the bones,  thus it is considered essential for proper bone development and growth. Sunlight, especially ultraviolet light, lets human skin cells convert vitamin D from an inactive to active state. In the absence of vitamin D, dietary calcium is not properly absorbed, resulting in hypocalcaemia, leading to skeletal and dental deformities and neuromuscular symptoms.

Foods that contain vitamin D include butter, eggs, fish liver oils, margarine, fortified milk and juice, portabella and shiitake mushrooms, and oily fishes such as tuna, herring, and salmon.

A rare X-linked dominant form exists called vitamin D-resistant rickets or X-linked hypophosphatemia.

Signs and symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness in the bones of your arms, legs, pelvis, or spine
  • Deformities in your teeth or delayed tooth formation, an increased number of cavities, holes in your enamel, abscesses, or defects in the structure of your teethRickets is caused due to Vitamin ‘D’ deficiency
  • Impaired growth and short stature
  • Bone fractures
  • Muscle cramps
  • Skeletal deformities, including: an oddly shaped skull, legs that bow out (bowlegs), bumps in your ribcage, a protruding breastbone, a curved spine pelvic deformities

Diagnosis

Rickets may be diagnosed with the help of:

Blood tests: Serum calcium may show low levels of calcium, serum phosphorus may be low, and serum alkaline phosphatase may be high from bones or changes in the shape or structure of the bones. This can show enlarged limbs and joints.

Bone biopsy is rarely performed but will confirm rickets.

Treatment and prevention

The most common treatment of rickets is intake of Vitamin D rich food sources or tablets. However, surgery may be required to remove severe bone abnormalities.

Increased dietary intake of calcium, phosphates and vitamin D is essential, cod liver oil, halibut liver oil, viosterol, milk, eggs are all good sources of vitamin D.

A sufficient amount of ultraviolet B light in sunlight each day and adequate supplies of calcium and phosphorus in the diet can prevent rickets. Darker-skinned people need to be exposed longer to the ultraviolet rays.  Most dermatologists recommend vitamin D supplementation as an alternative to unprotected ultraviolet exposure due to the increased risk of skin cancer associated with sun exposure.
