Is olive oil good for skin

Adding olive oil to the beauty routine may provide immense benefits to the skin, hair, & nails. Here are some of an olive oil skin benefits you can find surprising.

Olive oil contains three main antioxidants: Vitamin E, polyphenols, and phytosterols. Antioxidants, when topically applied, may protect the skin from premature skin aging. Vitamin E partly accounts for the anti-aging benefits of olive oil because it helps restore skin smoothness and protects against ultraviolet light. Hydroxytyrosol is a rather rare compound found in olive oil, also prevents free radical damage to the skin. here are the few reasons for Is olive oil good for skin

Antioxidant Protection

Over the last decade, everybody has been harping on the beauty benefits of olive oil, but the truth is this kitchen staple has used on the body since ancient times (thank you, Cleopatra). Olive oil has packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene, making it superb for hair, skin, and nails. Just like coconut oil, it is an essential in any DIY beauty maven’s kit.

Doesn’t Clog Pores

Unlike modern moisturizers that can clog pores and increase current skin conditions, olive oil penetrates deeply into the skin while providing the cleansing effect. Try using organic olive oil at night as a replacement for the regular moisturizer. Apply the teaspoon of the oil to the face & neck. Lightly pat the skin with a paper towel to wipe away any excess oil.

Enhances Exfoliation

Another one of olive oil’s gains for skin is its usefulness in exfoliating treatments. A common exfoliating system using olive oil is to mix 1 tablespoon of the oil with the natural sea salt, rubbing this mixture over the skin. The fine cutting qualities of the sea salt, combined with the broad, intense action of the oil, would remove dead skin cells and leave the epidermis looking refreshed and glowing.

General Beauty Booster

Olive oil is also used for nail & cuticle care, & many women use it as an eye makeup remover. Additional applications include using it as an ingredient in homemade facial masks. One other interesting application for both men and women is the replacement of olive oil for shaving cream. Many men have quit shaving cream once they discovered how close the shave they can get with olive oil. Men & women alike have also found its refreshing qualities make it an excellent aftershave.

Pre-shampoo Hair Treatment

Olive oil has been used as the hair treatment since ancient Egyptian times. First, warm the olive oil in the microwave or in the hot water. Then apply it freely to the ends of hair & scalp. Leave it in for up to 10 to 20 minutes, & then shampoo it out.

Lip Scrub

Combine unrefined sugar with a teaspoon of olive oil for the chapped-lip fix. You can also add the splash of lemon juice for added flavor & acidic exfoliating properties. This scrub is quite enough to eat (literally). Plus, you can increase the recipe for the whole body.

Eye-Makeup Remover

We know what you are thinking—slathering olive oil all over the face would actually cause bigger problems & clog pores. But in actuality, the oil grips onto other oil-based products (think: Like attracts like), making it an excellent cleaning step to remove stubborn eye makeup. Serve it up with warm water & a pH-balanced face wash.

Ear-Wax Remedy

If you frequently have ear-wax buildup, turn to olive oil to flush out the clog. For 3 or 4 nights, put a few drops in the ears before bed to help loosen plenty wax.

Shine Serum

There is no necessary to buy a separate hair product to allow shine on second-day strands. Just rub a few drops of olive oil on flyaway ends next method for an extra-glossy finish.

Run out of shaving cream? Head to the kitchen & slather legs with olive oil before using the blade. You will ward off razor burn and bumps with the help of this natural lubricant.

Antibacterial Balm

If you’re taking an all-natural way to medicine, you can whip up this DIY recipe for a Neosporin knockoff. It combines pure olive oil along with lavender, calendula, & tea tree oil to ward off germs & scarring.

Cuticle Conditioner

Want to grow longer, stronger nails? Use olive oil as the cuticle softener. Chef Giada De Laurentiis uses the oil to her hands as she cooks, and one can simply keep a little by the sink for post-sanitizing moisture.

Eczema Remedy

The best and most widespread use of olive oil is as an intense moisturizer. This product works great as a comprehensive treatment for extra-dry skin. Since it’s natural, it’s the ideal pick for eczema and more.

Diaper-Rash Treatment

There are very few products that are secure for both babies & adults. Olive oil is perfect for the sensitive skin on a baby’s bottom and as a moisturizing remedy for cradle cap too.

Cracked-Heel Repair

Split, rough heels require moisture to heal. After peeling with a pumice stone, apply olive oil to feet. Put on socks to lock in the hydrating treatment as you sleep.

Makeup-Brush Cleaner

Cleaning the makeup brushes should be the annual ceremony. You can use a DIY cleanser that’s two parts antibacterial soap and one part olive oil.

Amazing Skin Facts

More so when young, our obsession with looking good and getting rid of all those ugly pimples and blemishes is something we have all experienced. How much did we suffer having to go to college with skin that has spotted with all kinds of spots or blackheads? There were probably moments, like when we passed in front of a crush or love interest, that we would have preferred having a bag over our face to hide our bad skin. So being a little careful or perhaps obsessed, about having good skin is something that we can identify.

However, we don’t always know all there is to know about our skin. So for those who would like to increase their knowledge of it, here are some interesting facts that you probably weren’t aware.
Shedding your skin cells

Apart from being the largest organ in the human body, which we all already know, what most of us may not know is that there are about 19 million skin cells on every inch of our body, and we lose about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute of the day. Thus, in a lifetime the average person sheds enough skin to cover up a two story house. However, every 28 days the skin renews itself, so we don’t notice a thing. These are the few Amazing Skin Facts.

Knowing your thickest skin

The skin that covers the palms of your hand and skin of your feet is the thickest being about 1.5 mm thick. This outer layer of skin is called the epidermis.

Amazing Skin FactsThe ability to regenerate

When skin gets severely damaged, it is capable of healing itself. It has done by forming scar tissue, which is not the same as normal skin tissue. The difference being scar tissue has usually discolored and does not have sweat glands and hair.

The color question – what determines it?

Though many of us have always vied for a lighter skin color or perhaps people with fairer skin wish for darker tones, the bottom line is, color does not matter as it is determined by the amount of pigment melanin that is produced by the body. Small amounts of melanin will cause light skin while darker amounts lead to the darker skin so if you end up getting a skin color different from the rest of the family, it doesn’t cause for concern.

The skin – our protector?

Though you may not notice it, your skin plays an important role in keeping your body healthy as it protects the body from diseases and physically protects your bones, muscles, and internal organs.

Understanding calluses

Some parts of our skin has constantly exposed to repeated friction or pressure. Due to this, these areas form a thick, tough skin, and this has known as a callus. Guitarists usually develop calluses on their fingertips.

When it comes to animal skin

Though we do not see it that easily, every mammal has some hair on their skin. The skin of the rhinoceros is quite thick and is around 1.5 cm and 5 cm deep. Amphibians like frogs have a different type of skin wherein they soak water into their body through their skin. They also use it to absorb around half the air they need. Whereas when we think of polar bears, though they have white and transparent fur, their skin is black.

All in all, the skin certainly seems to be an amazing organ, so it is a good thing that we take so much trouble to look after it as it certainly does not deserve taken for granted.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Spread the love

In case one is feeling numbness, tingling, or weakness in one’s hand, it is advisable to consult the doctor in order to check oneself up for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This health condition is caused by pressure on one’s median nerve, which does run the length of the arm, goes through a passage in one’s wrist referred to as the carpal tunnel, and finally ends in the hand. The median controls the movement and also the feeling of one’s thumb, as well as the movement of all of one’s fingers except one’s pinky.

The carpal tunnel is narrowed as a result, usually from swelling.

Usually, this suffering from this health condition does not know what brought on their carpal tunnel syndrome. But it can happen on account of:

  • Repetitive motions, such as typing or any motions of the wrist that one can do over and over. This is especially true of actions when one’s hands are lower than one’s wrist.
  • Conditions such as like hypothyroidism, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes
  • Pregnancy

If one has carpal tunnel syndrome and does not get it treated, its symptoms can indeed last a long time, get worse, and can even go away and then return again. When one’s doctor diagnoses it early, it is easier to treat.

What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

One may feel a burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of one’s hand and thumb, or index as well as middle fingers.

One might first notice that one’s fingers “fall asleep” and become numb at night. That usually does happen in the evening because of the relaxed position of one’s hand and while sleeping.

In the morning, one may wake up with numbness and tingling in one’s hands that may run all the way to one’s shoulder.

What Happens in Severe Cases?

In case carpal tunnel syndrome does become more severe, one may have less grip strength as the muscles in one’s hand shrink. Pain and muscle cramping will also indeed become worse.
The median nerve does begin to lose function on account of the irritation or pressure around it. This leads to:

• Slower nerve impulses
• Loss of feeling in the fingers
• A loss of strength and coordination, especially the ability to use your thumb to pinch

One can stop this feeling which can cause permanent muscle damage and lose the function of one’s hand. It is advisable to consult one’s doctor without any further delay since its occurrence.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, TreatmentCarpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment

One can go in for yoga to surgery in order to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome tends to occur slowly and gets worse with time. But if one treated early on, one can slow it down or stop it in its tracks. Early treatment can also indeed make for a shorter recovery time.

Typically, one can start with basic remedies, such as wrist braces. In the case of more severe cases, one may require surgery.

Self-Care

In order to help ease the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, one can place ice on one’s wrist or soak it in an ice bath. Try it for 10 to 15 minutes, once or twice an hour.

One can also gently shake one’s wrist or hang it over the side of one’s bed for the pain that wakes one up at night.

Why rose is the most famous flower?

Why rose is the most famous flower? Rose is indeed a beautiful flower and is presented to people on many occasions. It is also a symbol of love and care. Beautiful adorn themselves with roses.

Formal events are held in the rose garden in the White House and roses are presented on several occasions as it is considered to be the most beautiful flower in the world. Roses smell sweet and everybody dreams of sleeping on a bed of roses. Roses are very famous as compared to other flowers. Why so?

Why rose is the most famous flower?

Rose flower, paper rose, the pink rose is well acclaimed by all and sundry. This is so on account of their symbolic versatility. Roses have been so celebrated for such a long time — the Minoans grew and painted roses in the Bronze Age. Roses represent all things to all people. They represent virginity, and particularly the Virgin Mary. Medieval brides and grooms rather wore crowns of roses to represent their purity. In England, roses were laid on the graves of virgins. But roses also represent passion as well as romance: Lovers exchange roses as a prelude to intimacy.

Roses symbolize suffering: Christian iconography does use the red rose as a symbol of Jesus Christ’s bodily suffering, as well as the blood of other saints such as Alban. Yet roses also tend to symbolize the peace that awaits people in the next world. Old Christian texts do describe paradise as strewn with roses.

Rose has been popular in Renaissance painting and also in English poetry. Rose flower, paper rose, the pink rose became very popular.
Roses do not feature of course in the Bible, even though wild roses did grow in the ancient Near East. Early Christians did not favor the use of flowers, incense, and statues in rituals. It was not until half a century after Christ’s death that flowers came back into Western religious practice. There were competitors to the rose. In early medieval writings, lilies are mentioned almost as often as roses. The focus has been on the rose flower, paper rose beautiful pink roses.

Some cultures have myths explaining exactly how the rose earned its place at the top. According to a Persian poem, the lotus was the original queen of flowers, but it made the mistake of sleeping during the night. When the other flowers complained to Allah, he named the white rose queen. A Hindu legend has it that Vishnu had to convince Brahma of the roses into Western religious practice. It’s not clear why the popularity of the lily took a backseat to the surging rose.

The rose’s rise to prominence at the White House isn’t quite so symbolically rich. During the 19th century, the building had a glass conservatory in which gardeners grew many different kinds of flowers, as well as fruit. (On the morning of his assassination, Abraham Lincoln picked lemons from the conservatory to give to visitors, but he confessed to having little interest in flowers.) When the conservatory was removed in 1902, Edith Roosevelt had a garden constructed. Amateur landscape architect Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, had the colonial garden converted to a dedicated rose garden in 1913.

An increasing life span, socio-economic changes, and lifestyle risk factors do play a role in this rise.
CAD can be prevented with medications and by maintaining good heart health. Some steps a person can take to decrease the risk include:

A person may also feel breathlessness, wheezing, and a tight feeling in one’s chest. Untreated lower respiratory infections can lead to breathing failure as well as death.

One of the best preventative measures that can be taken against lower respiratory infections is to be able to get the flu shot every year. People who are at high risk of pneumonia can also get a vaccine. Wash the hands regularly with soap and water to avoid transmitted bacteria, especially before touching the face and before eating. Stay at home and rest until one feels better in case of a respiratory infection, as rest does improve healing.

You have to get the raccoon eyes off anyhow, but many makeup removers include harsh chemicals that are very drying to the skin, says Ildi Pekar, founder of an eponymous skincare line. She recommends you squeeze a dash of pure aloe gel onto a cotton ball and swipe away the day for a simple and efficient alternative.

As a face wash

Is there anything it can’t do? Mix 1 Tbsp aloe vera gel with one tsp almond milk, and one tsp lemon liquid and let sit for the few minutes before cleaning. Since some minerals found in aloe are antibacterial, this face wash is ideal for sensitive skin, breakouts, and rosacea, says Pekar. Need an anti-aging aid? Mix 1 Tbsp aloe with one tsp 100% raw organic coconut oil, massage into hands till the contents are warm, and then wash and rinse.

It’s not the most pleasant part of grooming, but exfoliation is important if you want to reveal glowing fresh skin. Aloe is an excellent base for a homemade scrub because it helps soften the skin and supply oxygen to the cells, strengthening the tissue to create vibrant skin, says Pekar. Mix 1/2 cup of aloe with just sufficient brown sugar or baking soda to get a rough (but not sharp) texture. Then rub it on the elbows, heels, arms, or anywhere else needs softening in the shower.

For bad breath

Come a little closer…no, actually—do not. When bad breath hits, take up to 1/4 cup pure aloe vera gel melted in the 1/2 cup of water or apple juice. We love a high brow, but tidiness is key. Dip the clean mascara wand in some aloe vera gel & sweep over stray eyebrows for serious stay-put power without becoming hard or sticky.

And if one did go overboard with the tweezing, “Mix one part aloe gel with one part castor oil. It seems to nourish over-plucked eyebrows grow in faster.”

For dry, cracked feet

Petra Strand, the creator of Pixi Beauty, incorporates this primary raw beauty ingredient into the foot mask that makes dry, cracked feet baby soft. Mix 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup corn meal, 4 Tbsp aloe vera gel, and 1/2 cup unscented body lotion & rub all over tired feet until well exfoliated. Sit for 10 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

As an own hand sanitizer

Sick of the hand sanitizer drying out your hands? Mix 1/2 cup aloe vera gel, 1/4 cup alcohol, and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil & pour into a spritz bottle. “The alcohol fights germs while the aloe soothes your skin,” says Katz. To use, spritz once & rub between hands.

It treats sunburn.

Aloe Vera helps with sunburn through its vigorous healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin, the layer of cells that cover the body. It acts as the protective layer on the skin & helps provide its moisture. Because of its nutritional qualities & antioxidant properties, the skin heals quicker.

It acts as a moisturizer.

Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a creamy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin pigmentation. For women who use mineral-based make-up, aloe vera acts as the moisturizer and is great for the face before the application to prevent skin drying. For men: Aloe vera gel can use as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts caused by shaving.

It treats acne.

Aloe vera gel contains two hormones: Auxin & Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that decrease skin inflammation. How to Remove Acrylic Nails

3 Methods to Remove Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails look to be the craze these days, but removing them may be a bit challenging if you haven’t taken proper care of them. The good news, however, is that you have arrived at the right page if you’re wondering how to remove acrylic nails because we’re going to show you not one but two ways to get the job done.

How to Remove Acrylic Nails:

Method 1 – Things you will need

  • Nail clipper
  • Nail polish remover
  • Glass bowl
  • Olive oil
  • Moisturizing lotion
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Clean towel
  • Orange wood stick
  • Nail file
  • Nail buffer

Steps:

For the first step, you will want to start with trimming the nails down as short as probable and carefully so that you don’t hurt yourself. It will make the process easier and quicker as there will be fewer acrylic nails to clean up.

The second step is only getting a glass bowl and filling it partly with acetone nail polish remover, and setting it aside before taking any substances or lotions on your hands.

The third step is using the nail file to buffer the nails to remove the gloss. Make sure you move around the nail frequently and uniformly, and not focus on a single spot. Clean off the dust once you have completed this step.

The fourth step of removing acrylic nails with method 1 is applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the skin that is in contact with the nail bed. It will ensure your skin has preserved from the acetone nail polish remover. It is best to practice more petroleum jelly than to save out on it.

In step 5, you want to dip your-your nails in the bowl of acetone nail polish remover for approximately 15 to 20 minutes or until the glue that binds the acrylic nail to the natural nail bed starts to come off.
When the glue has detached after dipping the nails in acetone nail polish remover, you will notice that the nails have gotten mushy. So gently try to exclude the acrylic nail, & if you feel some resistance, repeat step 5. Everything you do, never attempt to force or pry your acrylic nails off because it can cause some severe damage to the nail and also point to the infection.

In step 6, remove your acrylic nails and wash your hands thoroughly with water to get rid of the petroleum jelly & the acetone nail polish remover from the hands.

If there’s any leftover glue, just use a buffer to remove it.

Step 7 is the last step and involves applying cuticle oil or olive oil to moisturize the nails after being dried out by the entire nail removal process.

How to Remove Acrylic NailsMethod 2 -Things you will need:

  • 12 inches of floss
  • Metal file

Steps:

  1. This method of removing acrylic nails is relatively straightforward, but you will require two people to do it. It is faster, but not prescribed for those who suffer from skin or brittle nails.
  2. In the first step, take the metal nail file & use it at the tip of the nail to lift it just sufficient to slip the dental floss underneath it.
  3. Wrap-around 12 inches of dental floss around the index finger of each hand of the second person.
  4. Now slip the floss under the point you created in step 1.
  5. Get the second person to pull gently towards the end of the nail bed in a sawing motion.
  6. The acrylic nail should pop right off.
  7. The second method is certainly much quicker, but can cause far more injury than the first way. But these are the best solutions to how to remove acrylic nails at the house, without attending a nail salon.

Method 3 – Remove acrylic nails with acetone

Today we are going to encourage you to remove an acrylic nail in the natural ways, i.e. using acetone.

Note: If you are not patient complete, then the process will damage your natural nails and your nail bed. Therefore take your time and slowly proceed.

Things you would need:

  • Nail cutter/ nail trimmer.
  • Acetone.
  • Hot water.
  • Cotton.
  • Tweezers.
  • Lots of patience.

Step wise Procedure

Step 1: Using a nail trimmer or nail cutter, trim your acrylic nails to the shortest possible length. It will decrease the removal time.

Step 2: Dip the cotton ball in the acetone and remove any nail polish/ top coat/ base coat from your acrylic nails. This action will assure that the hands does not catch any color from the nail polish once it is removed. If you dip your nails directly within acetone with the nail polish, then the hands will be slightly colored, or the nail polish might stick to the hands. This step prevents any mess.

Step 3: Take a bowl filled with acetone & place it in another bowl containing hot water. It is too warm the acetone slightly.

Step 4: Dip your hands in the acetone extract. Keep the hands in the solution for 20-25 minutes or till the acrylic nails grow softer.

Step 5: Take the hand out of the solution & using tweezers; gently peel off the acrylic nails. If you find that they are not getting peeled off, do not pull. Just dip the hands in acetone for few more minutes.

Step 6: After all the acrylic nails get peeled off; apply cuticle oil to your nails. It will ensure that the natural nails are not damaged.

Step 7: This step is optional. If you want, one can apply a moisturizer to the hands as acetone dries out your skin.

It is the simplest of ways to remove acrylic nails without harming your natural ones. Post removal, make sure you regularly moisturize and hydrate your hands.

How to do a Paraffin Wax Manicure?

Spread the love

If you have rough hands and are looking for an effective remedy to smoothen the skin, paraffin wax manicure may be the right option for you. Paraffin wax has been known for its healing properties since the ancient times. Previously, it was used in massage therapy. Today, it has a wide range of applications, from treating injuries incurred from sports activities, inflammation and arthritis to sore joints. It also has the ability to soften the skin. Therefore, you may opt for paraffin wax manicure to treat your rough skin in the hands.

Paraffin wax manicure can be easily done through the following steps:

  • The wax has to be heated in a bowl till it is liquefied. You may place the bowl in a microwave and heat it in the interval of ten seconds. When the wax is liquefied, leave it for some time and let it cool.
  • In the meantime, you need to moisturize your hands. Use a thick lotion or cream to massage the hands. On rubbing the hands, they will become moisturized.
  • Now check out the temperature of the wax. It should not be too hot to burn your hands. If you find the temperature to be optimum, dip the hands in the bowl of wax. Keep them immersed in wax for a few seconds and lift them up. After an interval of five seconds, dip the hands in wax once again. Continue this process till the entire surface of your skin is covered with wax. You need to get around five to seven layers of wax in your hands.
  • Once you are done with this step, you should wait for the wax to do its work. Relax, watch television or simply sit back and wait for at least half an hour. The wax will soften the skin in your hands and eliminate the roughness.
  • When the wait is over, peel off the wax and remove the solidified coating. When the entire covering is gone, apply lotion or cream on your hands to make it soft. Wear a glove for the next few hours to retain the effect of the cream.
  • You have to repeat the same process with the other hand to make it soft.

Precautions to do a Paraffin Wax Manicure?

How to do a Paraffin Wax Manicure?

You need to dip your hands in the wax several times. Each time you dip them in the wax, a separate layer is created. This layer should be thick enough to let the wax do its work. Therefore, make sure that you give enough time for each layer to solidify before you dip the hands in the wax again. The fresh layer should not mix with the existing layer. You should wait until the previous layer completely dries up.

You should not wriggle or move your fingers when you get the wax coating. It will result in cracks in the layers and they will fall off. The entire process will become ineffective if the wax develops cracks. Keep the fingers steady and do not move them.

The wax should be kept warm for as long as possible. Wrap the hands using a soft cloth when you wait. The therapeutic treatment turns out to be more effective when the warmth of the wax is retained for a longer duration.

After the manicure process is complete, you should not polish the nails. When you apply the nail polish, you need to clean off the natural oil from the treatment that has saturated the nails. This will reduce the benefits of the manicure.

Paraffin wax manicure will remove the roughness from your hands. This is an easy process and you can try it out at home. Look out for the precautions, so that you can obtain optimum benefits from the treatment.

Common Medical Conditions Affecting Older People. Elderly people are prone to certain diseases and there are proper treatment facilities to deal with them. The older one gets, the problem of health does emerge.

Age is beset with health problems. Older people do suffer from certain diseases that commonly occur. One needs to be aware of medical conditions, common health problems in the elderly.

1. Alzheimer’s:

This involves the loss of memory. Alzheimer’s is a kind of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking as well as behavior. It is commonly seen in the elderly and this condition is largely misdiagnosed as loss of memory. The patient suffers damage in areas of the brain that control language, reasoning, sensory processing, and conscious thought. Memory loss and confusion do become worse, and the person begins to have problems recognizing family and friends.

Present treatment happens to be in the form of dealing with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s but they do not eradicate the cause of the condition. Newer drug therapies tend to target the affected area and will be indeed be administered as a cocktail of medications, similar to HIV therapy. Since they are only in the animal testing phase and have not been tested on humans, these drugs are still shrouded by speculation.

2. Parkinson’s:

This is a disease or rather an illness that does affect the brain, in which certain nerve cells – which play an important role in motor functions of the body – are lost or die. The loss of nerve cells does take place slowly, and gradually tends to spread to several areas of the brain, as a result, new symptoms do gradually develop over time and the initial symptoms become more difficult to control. This condition is commonly seen in the elderly because as a person ages, the body tends to degrade as well. Patients with Parkinson’s disease may also have difficulty maintaining balance, walking and tend to fall even when they are slightly off-balance, however, this usually occurs much later in the disease. Other common symptoms do include a change in the quality of voice, stooped posture and change in handwriting.

Earlier, patients were treated with medication and physiotherapy. Medication to increase the dopamine (a neurotransmitter) in the brain was replaced since it was believed that the disease was due to its absence. Today, treatment is much advanced. The surgeon implants electrodes in the brain and it automatically does stimulate that part of the brain affected by Parkinson’s. In certain cases, lesioning some areas of the brain also does help in controlling the disease at a lower cost.

3. Arthritis:

People tend to develop osteoarthritis after the age of 40. It is a condition that is caused due to the wear and tear of the cartilage. Although there are other reasons for this condition, such as an overactive autoimmune system that causes rheumatoid arthritis, the one caused due to old age (osteoarthritis) is most commonly seen in the elderly. As a person grows, the cartilage that is present between two bones slowly starts to degrade. Soon it reaches a point where it becomes extremely thin and does allow the bones to rub against each other. This causes pain, inflammation, and difficulty in moving the joint.
Presently, the treatment revolves around providing the patient relief from swelling and the pain. Newer treatments include surgical procedures like chondroplasty (where the rough cartilage is smoothed out to reduce friction), abrasion or micro-fracture (where a small part of exposed bone is stimulated to grow scar tissue in that area, helping reduce friction), Osteochondral Autograft (or allograft) transplant (OATS procedure) where the cartilage is replaced with that from another region in the body or from a donor (cadaver).

4.Diabetes:

In the elderly, the most common type of diabetes seen is Type 2 diabetes. It is believed that this condition is on account of the decline in the body to use insulin. The reason controlling diabetes is so necessary as it directly reduces the risk of developing problems such as heart attacks, stroke, loss of blood circulation in the limbs, kidney disorders as well as eye disorders.
Currently, there are several drugs available in the market to help control one’s blood sugar successfully. also read: 15 Warning Symptoms of Diabetes

5.Disk prolapse:

This is a condition where the cartilage present between the vertebrae shift out of position, leading to the compression of one’s spinal column and the nerves extending out into the rest of one’s body. The most common symptoms of this condition are a tingling feeling in the hands or legs, lower back pain, numbness in the arms or legs, etc. This is again a fairly common condition in the elderly as the cartilage tends to degrade thus making them thinner and therefore more vulnerable to slipping out of place.

There are several advancements in treating this health condition. These include prosthetic intervertebral disc placement, endoscopic laser discectomy (involves cutting the prolapsed part of the disc using a laser).

Medical conditions, common health problems in the elderly cannot be ignored.
