It is quite common in underdeveloped and developing countries due to poor sanitation and unhygienic food habits. Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite of human which resides in the intestine. It is infected or transmitted through contaminated food and water with the parasite. It forms a hard thick shell to survive harsh conditions and sustain through and transmit to other healthy individual. This stage of the life cycle of entamoeba histolytic is called as cyst. When it is transmitted to a new host it becomes active and the active trophozite causes ulcers in the intestines. It can also spread to other organs like the liver, lungs, and brain by invading the venous system of the intestines. If it invades the liver, it causes formation of the typical anchovy paste like pus.

Hepatic amoebiasis-

Complications of hepatic amoebiasis include sub diaphragmatic abscess, perforation of diaphragm to pericardium and pleural cavity, perforation to abdominal cavity (amoebic peritonitis) and perforation of skin (amoebic cutis).

Pulmonary amoebiasis-

It can occur from hepatic lesion by haemotagenous spread and also by perforation of pleural cavity and lung. It can cause lung abscess, pulmono pleural fistula, empyema lung and broncho pleural fistula.

Amoebic brain abscess-

Entamoeba histolytica can also reach brain through blood vessel and cause amoebic brain abscess and amoebic meningoencephalitis.

Symptoms

  • Lower abdominal pain, diarrhea and followed by dysenteryAmoebiasis- A gastroenteritis problem

Appendicitis is caused due to a vestigial organ

Spread the love

Appendicitis is the inflammation of appendix. It causes a severe pain in the abdomen. Appendix doesn’t have known function in humans, therefore it is believed to be one of the vestigial organ of human beings. There are still speculations about the function of appendix, some say it is used to house useful bacteria etc. Appendix is situated in the junction of small intestine and large intestine. The size is around 4 inches long. The position of the appendix is towards right side of the abdomen

Appendicitis is caused due to a vestigial organ

Causes of appendicitis

The cause of appendicitis is still unclear. Doctors and scientist believe that the cause of inflammation and pain of appendix is obstruction in the appendix. The obstruction may be complete or incomplete. Complete obstruction causes severe pain and appendectomy is done immediately.

Obstruction of appendix is often caused due to fecal matter accumulation. Other obstructions include worms, tumors, and enlarged lymphoid follicles.

Due to this obstruction there is a good chance of bacterial growth that causes infection and therefore pain etc. It is fatal if the infection spreads or the appendix ruptures due to the pressure, leaking the contents of the large intestine into the abdomen.

Symptoms of  appendicitis

  • Lower right side abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • NauseaAppendicitis- caused due to a vestigial organ
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Inability to pass gas
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Low grade fever

Diagnosis

The following tests are done when a patients complains of having abdominal pain at right side and other symptoms mentioned above

  • Medical examination: The original test for appendicitis, a simple examination of the belly remains important in making the diagnosis. Changes in the abdominal exam help doctors tell if appendicitis is progressing, as well.
  • CT scan (computed tomography): A CT scanner uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images. In appendicitis, CT scans can show the inflamed appendix, and whether it has ruptured.
  • Ultrasound: An ultrasound uses sound waves to detect signs of appendicitis, such as a swollen appendix.
  • Complete blood count (CBC): An increased number of white blood cells — a sign of infection and inflammation — are often seen on blood tests during appendicitis.
  • Other imaging tests: When a rare tumor of the appendix is suspected, imaging exams may locate it. These include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and CT scans.

Treatment

Appendectomy is the only possible treatment for appendicitis. Sometimes it is treated by using antibiotics, however most often appendix is removed by surgery.

Spread the love

As hiccups are annoying and sometimes embarrassing, they sink on their own in some time. If you experience hiccups frequently, the interference that they cause can be uncomforting. How to get rid of hiccups in 60 seconds.

why do you get hiccups?

Hiccups are caused by sudden contraction of diaphragm and are involuntary. When the diaphragm repeatedly contracts, the vocal cords shut quickly and air flow has prevented, thus creating ‘hic’ sound. Hiccups may occur individually or in bouts and time between each hiccup is almost steady.

How to get rid of them quickly?

There are many home remedies that stop hiccups, but one that works best is holding your breath. All you need to do is take the deep breath and hold it for few seconds and let it out slowly. Repeat this 2 or 3 times if your hiccups do not fall down in one go. When you hold your breath, the air in your lungs helps push the diaphragm down, helping it expand and hence relieve you from the hiccups.

Gangrene – Cell death or necrosis

Spread the love

Gangrene – Cell death or necrosis is a condition in which the body tissue dies due to lack of blood supply caused due to infection or any physical trauma or any chronic health affecting blood circulation. It is a life threatening problem; the death of the tissue is called as necrosis. Diabetes and smoking increases the risk of having gangrene. Necrosis occurs mostly in the body lower extremities like legs and feet, it can also occur in fingers, intestine etc.

Blood is an important connective tissue in the body; it acts as a carrier and connects all the parts of the body by supplying oxygen, nutrients, hormones etc. It also plays an important role in maintaining the body temperature, which is an important factor for many metabolic processes. Therefore if there is any discrepancy in this blood supply to any tissue or body part, severe damage happens if not treated soon. The cells die slowly and cannot be replaced.

There are two different types of gangrene

Wet gangrene

Wet gangrene is more dangerous than dry. It is caused due to severe physical trauma which can cut off the blood supply easily and can cause infection too. Due to the infection pus is formed, that is the reason it is called as wet gangrene and chances are there for spreading of the infection. This is very fatal if not treated soon.

Dry gangrene

Dry gangrene as the name suggests this type of gangrene the tissue becomes dry and scaly. It is often seen in diabetic and autoimmune disordered people. It mainly is seen in toes and feet. The tissue become dry, it changes colour due to lack of blood supply, becomes blue to black and finally it is autoamputated. Infection is not seen in dry gangrene but once infection occurs it changes to wet gangrene.

Signs and symptoms

  • Skin at the affected areas becomes shiny and dry.
  • Shedding of the top layers of the skinGangrene - Cell death or necrosis
  • Clear cut difference between the tissue affected and healthy tissue
  • Skin colour changes from brown to blue and then black
  • In wet gangrene the tissue infected has blisters of pus and the smell is foul
  • The tissue becomes cold and looses its sensation and movement is stopped.
  • The arteries present at the tissue loose their pulse.

Treatment

  1. The method of treatment is generally determined by the location of affected tissue and extent of tissue loss. The best treatment for gangrene is revascularization (i.e., restoration of blood flow) of the afflicted organ, which can reverse some of the effects of necrosis and allow healing.
  2. Other treatments include antibiotic therapy, wound care, debridement and surgical amputation.
  3. Angioplasty should be considered if severe blockage in lower leg vessels (tibial and peroneal artery) which leads to gangrene
