10 Common Childhood Illnesses and Their Treatments

Children often fall ill and parents need to deal with a list of common illnesses. No doubt, common childhood diseases in India are of much concern to parents.

Children must get the best medical care. Parents need to pay much attention to it. Common childhood diseases in India cannot be overlooked. It is worth knowing more about the list of common illnesses affecting children.

Pediatricians are much concerned with the health of children. Parents have to cope up with common childhood illnesses.

1.  Sore Throat

Sore throats are common in children and can cause much pain. Babies and toddlers rarely tend to get strep throat, but they are more likely to become infected by rather a streptococcus bacteria. A child can get infected by playing with a toy.

2.  Ear Pain

Ear pain is common in children and is due to several reasons such as ear infection, swimmer’s ear (infection of the skin in the ear canal, and pressure from a cold or rather sinus infection, teeth pain radiating up the jaw to the ear, and others. In case the ear pain is accompanied by a high fever, involving both ears, or in case the child has other signs of illness, the pediatrician can decide that antibiotic treatment is better.

3.  Urinary Tract Infection

Bladder infections are also referred to as urinary tract infections or UTIs, which occur when bacteria build up in the urinary tract. A UTI can be found in children from infancy and through the teen years as well as into adulthood. Symptoms of a UTI do include pain or burning during urination, the need to urinate frequently or urgently, bedwetting or accidents by a child who does know to use the toilet, abdominal pain, or side or back pain.

4.  Skin Infection

In order to treat children with skin infections, a skin test (culture or swab) may be required in order to determine the most appropriate treatment.

5.  Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis happens to be an infection of the larger, more central airways in the lungs and is more often seen in adults.

6. Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is common in infants and young children during the cold as well as flu season. “Wheezing” sound can be heard when the child breathes.

7.  Pain

The ideal medicines for pain relief for children are acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It is better to consult the pediatrician about how much to give to one’s child, as it needs to be based on one’s child’s weight.

8. Colds

Colds are due to viruses in the upper respiratory tract. Children between 6 to 8 colds do get it. Symptoms of a cold include a runny nose, congestion, and cough that can last for up to ten days. Children need to be protected from cold.

9.  Bacterial Sinusitis

Bacterial sinusitis is on account of bacteria trapped in the sinuses. Sinusitis is suspected when the patient experiences cold-like symptoms such as nasal discharge, daytime cough, or both that last over ten days without improvement.
Antibiotics may be required in case the condition is accompanied by thick yellow nasal discharge and is accompanied by a fever for at least 3 or 4 days in a row.

10.  Cough

Coughs are caused by viruses and do not often require antibiotics.
Cough medicine is not usually recommended for children 4 years of age and younger, or for children 4 to 6 years of age unless advised by the doctor.
