Diabetes is the lifestyle and hereditary disease in which the blood sugar level improves the uncontrollably. So, if you are diabetic, you would want to start off your day with a bowl of corn flakes thinking it as a good diet plan for diabetes. But, diabetics can eat corn flakes? Well, it would not be unfortunate to say that corn flakes are not a healthy option for diabetic patients as it aggravates the risk of not only diabetes but many other lifestyle diseases also.

We all know that a healthy breakfast should contain food that are low in calories, sugar and fat, but should have high nutritional values and fibre content. Choosing your diet is one of the vital factors in keeping the blood sugar level at a normal range, mainly if you are diabetic. So, how about a bowl of corn flakes and milk?

Corn flakes can be a choice only if they are taken in moderation. Before reaching on a conclusion on are corn flakes good for diabetes, let us have a look at the effect of corn flakes in diabetic patients.

High Glycemic Index (GI)

It is a way to measure how carbohydrate-rich foods can elevate the blood sugar levels pretty quickly. As corn flakes have a GI value of 83, it creates a sudden enlarge in the blood glucose level So, how is corn flakes good for Diabetics? Just think about it!

Low Protein Content

Corn flakes have a very low protein content in it. So even after having a cup of corn flakes you might not feel fuller. Therefore, after some time this will leave your stomach grumble for snacks or meals because of a mid-energy collapse.

Low Fibre Content

Fibre is a very important element in controlling the blood sugar levels and can even control the risk of heart disorders. Lack of enough fibre content in corn flakes is because of the modification process of corn that it undergoes during the processing stage.

Weight Gain

Even though corn flakes are low in fat content they cause fat build-up and contains high fructose corn syrup (an artificial sweet-flavouring substance). In addition to this chemical sweetener, people often add sugar or honey to enhance the taste of corn flakes. Undoubtedly, this will definitely put you at a higher risk of weight gain within a short span of time.

High Sodium Levels

Corn flakes are the secret sources of sodium. Studies disclose that a cup of corn flakes contains more sodium than a pack of potato chips. This improves  the risk of high blood pressure making the person flat to heart diseases.
