DIY Homemade Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Elderberries are one of my most used remedies for the coolest months. The dried berries of the plant Sambucus Nigra are naturally rich in immunity-stimulating compounds that are specifically demonstrated to help beat the common cold and flu faster. They can be used to make a variety of remedies, and my favorite is this simple DIY Homemade Elderberry Syrup Recipe.

If you or your child have ever had a rudimentary case of colds or flu, you know how miserable it can be. Especially for moms, it is awful to see your children feel so bad and not be able to repair it. Fortunately, nature provides remedies that can help avoid minor illnesses and shorten the duration if you do not get them.

Black Elderberries or Sambucus nigra have been shown to help prevent these diseases and accelerate recovery in those who already have them. I have also found that elderberries seem to offer some relief from discomfort during minor illnesses.

DIY Homemade Elderberry Syrup RecipeIngredients To Prepare Elderberry Syrup Recipe

  • Dried black elderberries: ⅔ cup (about 3 ounces)
  • Water: 3½ cups
  • Cinnamon powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh or dried ginger root: 2 Tablespoons
  • Cloves or Clove powder: ½ teaspoon
  • Raw honey: 1 cup

Instructions Elderberry Syrup Recipe

  1. Pour the water into a medium saucepan and add the elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves (do not add the honey)
  2. Bring to a boil then cover and reduce to simmer for about 45 minutes to the hour till the liquid has decreased by almost half. At this time, separate from heat & let it cool sufficiently to be handled. Mash the berries using a spoon or other flat utensil. Pour through the sieve into a bowl or a glass jar.
  3. Discard the elderberries (or compost them!) And let the liquid cool to lukewarm. When it is no longer hot, add 1 cup of honey and stir well.
  4. When the honey is well mixed in the mixture of elderberries, pour the syrup into a quarter jar of masonry jar or a glass bottle of 16 ounces of a kind.
  5. Ta Da! You have just made homemade elderberry syrup! Store in the refrigerator and take it daily for its immune boosting properties. Some sources recommend taking only during the week and not the weekend to enhance immunity.
  6. The standard dose is ½ c. Tea to 1 tsp. Tea for children and ½ tsp. Serve at 1 tablespoon At the table for adults. If the flu strikes, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until the symptoms subside.
